I heart Tiki Oasis! One of the last great kitschy good times.
Held in he entirety of the Hanalai Hotel in San Diego and splashing out into all the surrounding hotels and their respective bars, this annual tiki lifestyle extravaganza is an opportunity of a lifetime.
It is an enthusiastic giant size 3 day hotel party with tons of garage/punk/lounge performers, pin up girls and boys, collectibles, and…. tiki style clothing and streetwear.
Thursday, August 10 – Sunday, August 13th, 2017
In the Hanalai, which was just recently sold, which also means the debauchery level and beautiful chaos may never be this intense ever again. Corporate Debbie Downers will probably put the kibosh on the unrivaled revelry.
Be there by all means. If you make it, stop by the Popular Naughty / Danger Factory booth and buy THIS for example.
We will be vending all weekend, well, my lovely assistant will be vending all weekend while I carouse by the pool, seek creatures, and bask in the zillions of pieces of art, craft, design and style that is the world of Tiki Oasis. All weekend, a complete takeover of a hotel, bar, and pool, with dozens of parties and bands going on all night in the suites after the seminars, tutorials, performances and rum tastings are over. Baby Doe and Otto von Stroheim have a real cultural phenomenon here.
Join us in the vending room where we will have some amazing tiki, kustom kulture, and pop-art books from Last Gasp Publishing, a selection of Monster Tiki Mugs from Boo-Tiki, the hot t-shirt action of burlesque/punk born Popular Naughty, AND a rare Limited Edition Mug from neo-legendary Las Vegas tiki nightclub The Golden Tiki. This mug will guarantee admission to their penthouse soirees on Friday and Saturday nights.
Here’s a teaser of one of the rare mugs from Boo-Tiki!
Dumping merch at Comic Con. Only THIS year it’s not just Popular Naughty, Danger Factory, and Royal Armageddon… it is also some PHENOMENAL TIKI MUGS and some new books from Last Gasp, America’s Premier Publisher of the Free-est Fucking Speech Around. Here is a preview of the Tiki Mugs.
Yeah. A LOT of stuff happens when you put 150,000 creative, enthusiastic people in one place. This is one of the MANY by-products of the San Diego Comic Con. 2013 was a great year.
More to come. The streets were filled with adventure, talent, and creative passion.
I have never owned a slide rule. I suspect that that simple fact excludes me from purebred nerd-dom. But why guess?
Over at Slackpropagation, A Web Journal about Machine Learning, Music, and other Mischief, they did a statistical sample of data using a developer portal at Twitter to look at over 26 million tweets. They found the following nerdy/geeky words and looked at whether they were also associated with “geek” or “nerd”.
On about 90% of these I agree. How “punk” got on the Nerd side I don’t know, ALL my music geek friends are into punk. Microsoft landing on the Geek side is also odd. But hey, this isn’t cancer research, it’s a frickin’ data whim.
Aah, but other than that it seems kinda bullseyeish, even the sad bits like “loneliness”, “autistic”, and “smartypants”. The full dose of info is fascinating. They took it pretty seriously. For example:
“Both are dedicated to their subjects, and sometimes socially awkward. The distinction is that geeks are fans of their subjects, and nerds are practitioners of them. A computer geek might read Wired and tap the Silicon Valley rumor-mill for leads on the next hot-new-thing, while a computer nerd might read CLRS and keep an eye out for clever new ways of applying Dijkstra’s algorithm. Note that, while not synonyms, they are not necessarily distinct either: many geeks are also nerds (and vice versa).”
There you go. Self categorize at your leisure.
A more thorough explanation of how they created this infographic can be found at their website. (http://slackprop.wordpress.com/2013/06/03/on-geek-versus-nerd/)
They are going to try to take over the world. Just like the other Pope hat wearing guy (you know, the Pope). But it might turn out to be cool. I say let them. Here is GHOST B.C. with Secular Haze from their 2013 release ‘Infestissumam’.
I always thought Velma was the hot one. The daft Daphne cheerleader character has never been my type. No sir, give me nerdy science facts, a bunch of logic, and a short skirt. THAT will get me in a mystery solving mood.
First mystery: How do I get Velma alone.
See much more at GeekXgirls, cool, very pro, and very uhh…. “appealing?” Cosplay.
You know, I’m a dude. I could go on a bit about this uber-hip, quick-witted, alabaster-skinned, authentic geek with strong opinions, sexy tattoos, hot pink mohawk, and tantalizing sexiness… BUT I am going to focus mostly on her opinions. The chicks got great taste! I love going to her webcasts cuz I know I am going to get some thorough, educated opinions from someone who has paid attention and put things through an OCD wringer. Although I totally dug the movie Prometheus, her way-the-fuck-too-indepth reporting and analysis made the experience a zillion times more fun. I look forward to watching the movie, re-listening to her rants, and watching it again.
Okay, yeah she is also crazy hot. But even if she was just a highly opinionated brain in a jar, she’s a keeper.
At the beggining of this post is a painting of her by Dan Dos Santos for Diana Rowland’s,r White Trash Zombie Apocalypse book. Go to https://www.facebook.com/Comicbookgirl19 to keep tabs on her adventures, she is gonna be a massive superstar. I told you first.
Sexy, manly, adventurey, swarthy, international adventure and espionage-y task team DANGER 5 is finally making it’s Hitler hunting way into the poposhpere of US geeks.
This remarkable blend of sci fi, Thunderbirds, Flint, Helm, and Sid and Marty Kroft is perfect in every way. The sound, the lines, the poor dubbing… all skillfully dated and brilliant. Oh, and don’t get me started on the supreme hotness of Natasa Ristic.
Enjoy this uber campy Danger 5 intro reel.
Claire does get a bit mouthy…. for a broad. Eagle headed Colonels don’t have the time for such nonsense.
It seems SOMEBODY swiped Adrianne Curry’s Stan Lee is my Homeboy t-shirt, which was a hand delivered gift from Popular Naughty. This of course means she will rain down her vengeance upon those deserving a wrathful raining. Or something.
So I went to Comikaze 2012 last weekend, partially to run up some display stuff and maybe help out a bit for the cast and crew of Bad Kids Go To Hell, my new fave indie cult hit; and also to see if it would be worth getting a booth for Popular Naughty.
I would have to say it is a good booth idea. The show itself is kinda old school Comic Con… easy to see it all, a very casual atmosphere to speak with the artists and creators, tons of super geek chic shopping options, and a reasonable load of panels to see. It did have a shortage of actual COMICS, but I am sure that will grow. Stan Lee IS one of the show’s owners now.
I LOVED that they had an pre-show concert. Pop art and alternative music have always been delightful bedfellows, so Peter Murphy was a perfect choice. Here are a few pics.
Now get this. Adrianne Curry, one of the show’s organizers, Stan, and Peter took the stage and Stan Lee and Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy sang a duet of That Old Black Magic.
Wow, the voice of legendary post punk goth group Bauhaus kneeling to the Nerd King.
A very cool alien salesman by the makeup peeps from Face Off.
Bad Kid Go TO Hell co-writer Matthew Spradlin had a casual victim/zombie relationship with a couple of roaming zombies.
There was also the cute geek factor.
Here is Bad Kids Go To Hell actress Amanda Alch lookin’ all retro megahoot.
Yes, I DO have a thing for redheads. Here is the ubercute Alana from Face Off.
Danger Factory, where geeks rule, weird is cool, and we swim in the exotic cocktail of music, art, and the world.
