Popular Naughty finally on your torso in LA.

Popular Naughty and Lethal Amounts Gallery

At this joint! The most cutting edge gallery I have ever visited. It is a slaughterhouse of edge. Someone yelped that it was “not a safe space.” Hell, “not a safe space” should be their slogan! This side dimension of a gallery is the best thing that could ever happen to to the sedated and subdued masses. The ultra-progressive art on the condensed walls, rattles the cages that our failed attempt at  society tries to create, as the experimental imagery they play with stimulates you into expanding your perceptions. Wake up. It isn’t always pretty, but it will still, somehow, be unbearably beautiful.

We will have lovely streetwear such as THIS!

There is going to be a LOT of really great ultra-alt merch and massively creative gifts here.  You need to put this on your radar.  If you don’t buy something from me, at least get something with the psychotically awesome punk rock, safety pin logo they use for Lethal Amounts.  Too perfect.  It makes me want to punch someone.

Then it’s off to the COREY HELFORD GALLERY · 571 S Anderson Street (awesomely about 6 blocks from the Danger Factory Lair in Boyle Heights), Los Angeles for an ULTRA POP evening with

You’re invited to join us in celebrating the opening of “TOYBOX” an exhibition of all new works by Ron English. On view in our main gallery is artist Ron English’s fantastic new solo exhibition of 36 new paintings, “TOYBOX: America in the Visuals.” The exhibition deconstructs the search for new meaning in a culture that is based as much on the imagination of its participants as on the physical realities these human concepts are played against. The toy based childhood imagination aesthetic of the work allows for a playful new look at a society in the throes of reinventing itself.
Featuring 36 new oil paintings, as well as sculptures and installations, the exhibition examines the creation of the self, and thus the greater society, as an act of imagination, a skill developed in childhood largely through the activity of play and the use of toys.

For this exhibition, English has also co-produced a musical soundtrack to be performed by new character DJ Popaganda. The exhibition will also include a new outdoor mural and a pop-up store selling Ron’s limited-edition toys.

Attaboy’s new crop of paintings for the show will feature a hand-painted garden of trippy mushrooms and other decomposing delights.

Attaboy shares: “I can’t stop painting these mushrooms, mainly to take a break from the constant barrage of news. I think it’s my own way of taking back control of my mind, remind myself that, while we must fight the recent tide of awful, it’s important to keep an eye out for the unexpected things, those little absurd buoys of wonder, we mustn’t lose them, they’re more important than ever.”

Here is a great interview with THAT over-achiever… https://www.insidetherift.net/art/2016/12/16/interview-with-artist-and-co-owner-of-hi-fructose-magazine-attaboy

Gallery art original by Lauren Marx, alternative art gift shopping and streetwear

Lauren Marx creates beautiful vignettes that speak to the cycle of life. Combining pen and ink with various mixed media, her paintings offer a raw depiction of birth and death.

On her choice to depict animals, Lauren has shared, “my work definitely plays upon the newly romanticized view of nature as this pure, beautiful, and distant world. Nature in art has steadily increased since the acceptance of global warming, deforestation, and the greater understanding of the human influences on delicate ecosystems. I feel that this is one of the reasons humans do not, nor will ever, appear in my work.”

Gallery art original of "Fauna" by RELM, alternative art gift shopping

“Fauna”, a beautiful new painting by Relm, for her new series, entitled “Peculiar Tales”. Relm shares: “I incorporate creatures, plants, and all kinds of life through the use of patterns and textures into the hair of my girls. My goals are to show the powerful relationship between humans and nature, whether it be good or bad. All the while simultaneously creating a new story with each piece.”

Gallery 3:
Miho Hirano, “Beauties in Nature”

Miho’s dreamy images are inhabited by ephemeral spirits at one with their natural environment. She adorns their hair with accessories made of flora and fauna like swarming bees, hummingbirds, and goldfish, each carrying their own weight as elements of beauty and symbols of the artist’s identity. In essence, each of her paintings represents a world where humans and nature can coexist.

Tiki Clothing and Art? Yeah! At Tiki Oasis 2017!!

I heart Tiki Oasis!  One of the last great kitschy good times.
Tiki oasis 2017 art print shop streetwear in the vendor section

Held in he entirety of the Hanalai Hotel in San Diego and splashing out into all the surrounding hotels and their respective bars, this annual tiki lifestyle extravaganza is an opportunity of a lifetime.

It is an enthusiastic giant size 3 day hotel party with tons of garage/punk/lounge performers, pin up girls and boys, collectibles, and…. tiki style clothing and streetwear.

Thursday, August 10 – Sunday, August 13th, 2017

In the Hanalai, which was just recently sold, which also means the debauchery level and beautiful chaos may never be this intense ever again.  Corporate Debbie Downers will probably put the kibosh on the unrivaled revelry.

Be there by all means.  If you make it, stop by the Popular Naughty / Danger Factory booth and buy THIS for example.

Nerdy Internet Marketing! For Geeks, Punks, and Evolutionarily Progressive Chaos Magicians!

Burlesque fan dancer t-shirt, Burlesque Angel of the Stage, Popular Naughty burlesque t-shirt, vintage performer

Sooo swamped with setting up the shop.  But really, I have gotten a lot of complaints about not doing the modern online shop thing.  A SUPER pain that deserved my procrastination, although Godaddy and SHopify have made things a lot easier.  It WILL be done by June 15, 2017 and we will be also do pre-orders for the new design production to bring to the San Diego Comic Con in July.  Remember, these are the original style of printing.  Screen printing.  Not the ooky on demand stuff that feels like a rubber badge and weathers so poorly.  This is forever print.  Even though I have been doing this kind of design for decades, I  am in search engine competition with all of those insty-print joints.  Especially for the word burlesque, and burlesque t-shirts.

As a result, I have to kinda lay it on thick here with overly descriptive terms.  I will try to at least keep it entertaining though.

Once the site is fully functional we can better create this sharing site for Geeks, Freaks, the Tongue in Cheeks, and other explorers of art and music.  Comic News too.  There is some great alternative stuff out there not getting enough attention.  We’ll help.

It’s a Mega OBEY!!

Time is slow when waiting… am I immortal yet?

I am still gathering data, still meeting important people in self-important people meetings, still waiting for answers to other questions that allow me to put together time commitments, THEN I can really work on this (here) online project.

In the meantime.  Check out this stunning record-setting mural my old buddy Shepard Fairey did in Las Vegas, where he was met and gifted by yet another old buddy Branden Powers with pizza. (Yes it IS a small world.)

Obey Giant mural in las vegas

Street artist Shepard Fairey’s mural on The Plaza in downtown Las Vegas.

Yes.  I am killing time and sharing excuses while showing my friends achievements that don’t seem to have those to whine about.  EVERYONE knows about Shepard and Obey and will know even more with whatever he’s about to do next, since he’s a super political activist and I am sure the Trump thing will not sit well. Already Shepard has issued some beautiful Women’s Rights posters. There will be more.

(first 3 shown bottom, keep scrolling)

That’s Shepard on the left and Branden lurking.

Branden?  Oh he’s just the serial entrepreneur and serial that’s-just-so-crazy-it-might-work idea man that brought Vegas- The Golden Tiki AND teamed up with the son of Evel Knievel to bring EVEL PIE to the Fremont District in downtown Las Vegas.

Outside and Inside

Maybe that is why I am subconsciously thinking of them as I’m somewhat mired by circumstance.  Shepard is the hardest working artist, hell maybe even the hardest working person of all, that I have ever met.  And Branden? That cat is one of the old school people responsible for the EDM scene as it is.  He was a GIANT rave promoter before EDM became an uhh, abbreviation (?), and since has been a juggernaut of weird throughout the wastelands of Nevada. They are two of my heroes and should be yours too.

Tiki Oasis 2014 in San Diego

Man, it LOOKS like we are a world-class pop metropolitan, what with Comic Con followed up by this coolness. It’s not. San Diego is still a frat-brat, binge-drinking, bro-town. We just have these breaks to cultivate our culture and talent (that ultimately heads north to LA or SF).

We will be VENDING the Danger Factory and Popular Naughty collections here over the weekend while we alternate our drooling over kustom kars and hula girls. Come see our pop subversive streetwear!

Yolandi Visser & the indie film madness of Cookie Thumper

Yolandi visser geek chic angel of death

Pre-Apocalyptic music impresarios Die Antwoord have unleashed another short musical (music video just doesn’t do it justice).  Again we see the uber-hot Yolandi Visser push the envelope. In fact she pushes it way off the table, into the next room, out the door and into the street.  This is going to offend many sensitive pansies.  Don’t be one of them.  Enjoy the shock. It is the work of beautiful monsters.

LOVE Yolandi Visser! She has so many looks (most of them sinister) and the art direction Ninja brings to the table is magnificent in its horrific beauty.

Then there is the SUPER sinister look. Still kinda hot though.

Geeky? Totally. Nerdy? A Bit.

I have never owned a slide rule. I suspect that that simple fact excludes me from purebred nerd-dom. But why guess?
Over at Slackpropagation, A Web Journal about Machine Learning, Music, and other Mischief, they did a statistical sample of data using a developer portal at Twitter to look at over 26 million tweets. They found the following nerdy/geeky words and looked at whether they were also associated with “geek” or “nerd”.
On about 90% of these I agree. How “punk” got on the Nerd side I don’t know, ALL my music geek friends are into punk. Microsoft landing on the Geek side is also odd. But hey, this isn’t cancer research, it’s a frickin’ data whim.
infographic showing the statistical differances between geek and nerd
Aah, but other than that it seems kinda bullseyeish, even the sad bits like “loneliness”, “autistic”, and “smartypants”. The full dose of info is fascinating. They took it pretty seriously. For example:
“Both are dedicated to their subjects, and sometimes socially awkward. The distinction is that geeks are fans of their subjects, and nerds are practitioners of them. A computer geek might read Wired and tap the Silicon Valley rumor-mill for leads on the next hot-new-thing, while a computer nerd might read CLRS and keep an eye out for clever new ways of applying Dijkstra’s algorithm. Note that, while not synonyms, they are not necessarily distinct either: many geeks are also nerds (and vice versa).”
There you go. Self categorize at your leisure.

A more thorough explanation of how they created this infographic can be found at their website. (http://slackprop.wordpress.com/2013/06/03/on-geek-versus-nerd/)
